January 2021 Reads

January 2021 Books.jpg

I started out January feeling like my reading was broken. Between the book hangover from the All Souls trilogy, and then the insurrection on January 6th, I had a really hard time getting into books. Surprisingly, I still managed to finish 6 books in January! I read many books at a slow and steady pace, which resulted in me finishing most of them close to the same time at the end of the month.

1. The Book of Life by Deborah Harkness

I devoured this series over 18 days. The magic, the characters, the history. And Matthew Clairmont can bite my neck ANYTIME.

2. A Great Reckoning (Gamache #12) by Louise Penny

and

3. Glass Houses (Gamache #13) by Louise Penny

The storylines of this series run together in my head and I have a hard time differentiating them from each other. I love this series and these characters so much! Three Pines feels like a second home at this point. And the audio is fantastic!

4. Jesus and John Wayne by Kristin Kobes DuMez

I read this for the Bible Binge book club. This book is important, and it’s hard to say that I liked it. I’m glad I read it and I will return to it at some point, but it was a hard read. This book puts a microscope on the past 75 years or so of the evangelical church. The Republican party and the religious right are enmeshed in an incestuous way. Explains how we got where we are with so many conservatives supporting Donald Trump.

5. Share Your Stuff. I’ll Go First by Laura Tremaine

I’m probably a bit biased about this one. I have followed and interacted with Laura for many years on social media. This book peered into my soul on a deep level. There are very few books that I feel like I can hand to every single person I know, but this is one of them. I truly felt like I was having a conversation with my most fascinating friend.

6. The Hearth Witch’s Year by Anna Franklin

This book walked through the year of a hearth witch. Some spells and recipes. I had hoped it would be more memoir and less how-to. I found the historical aspects of the book most interesting.
